Ohio State will be without a key piece on defense when they take on Marshall, as starting defensive tackle Tyleik Williams has been ruled out. While left guard Donovan Jackson returns to shore up the offensive line, the Buckeyes will need to tap into their depth to fill the void left by Williams at 3-technique.
Williams, who was seen favoring his shoulder during Ohio State’s Week 2 win over Western Michigan, hasn’t had his injury officially disclosed, but it’s significant enough to keep him out of action. The Buckeyes were hoping to enter the matchup against the Thundering Herd healthy after the Week 3 bye, especially with Jackson cleared to play earlier in the week.
In Williams’ absence, defensive coordinator Jim Knowles will have some options. Hero Kanu, who logged 16 snaps in the first two games, has been the next man up at 3-tech. Kayden McDonald, who has primarily played nose tackle but has proven effective with four tackles and a pass breakup in 34 snaps, could also be an option. Ty Hamilton, the starting nose guard, is another potential candidate to rotate in at 3-tech.
The Buckeyes may also use Caden Curry, who has played some 3-technique in passing situations, to help with the pass rush, while Jason Moore, who made significant strides in the spring, could see increased playing time as well. Freshmen Will Smith Jr. and Tywone Malone are also in the mix to get more snaps against Marshall.
On a positive note, Jackson’s return solidifies Ohio State’s starting offensive line for the first time in 2024. Austin Siereveld filled in admirably at left guard during the first two games, but Jackson’s experience as a 26-game starter over the last two seasons will be crucial. His return boosts a line that helped the Buckeyes rack up 273 rushing yards on seven yards per carry against Western Michigan. With Jackson back in the fold, Ohio State will look to continue its dominance in the run game.
Aside from Williams, the only other unavailable players for Ohio State are walk-on running backs TC Caffey, who is out for the season with a knee injury, and Rashid SeSay. All eyes will be on how the Buckeyes’ defense handles the absence of Williams, but there’s plenty of confidence in the depth stepping up against Marshall.
