Ohio State head coach Ryan Day expressed confidence in his team following the Buckeyes’ 35-7 victory over Iowa on Saturday. It was a game marked by Ohio State’s ability to both dominate defensively and efficiently execute on offense, giving the Buckeyes momentum heading into next week’s showdown with Oregon.
In his post-game press conference, Day reflected on the importance of overcoming early mistakes. “It’s a mixture of feelings,” he said, commenting on the first-half turnovers that led to a slower start than expected. “If we just take care of the football, we can turn this thing and get going.” Despite those setbacks, the team’s resilience paid off in the second half as Ohio State scored 28 unanswered points to put the game out of reach.
The Buckeyes’ defense was especially impressive, holding Iowa to just 90 total yards in the first half and capitalizing on short fields created by forced turnovers in the second half. Defensive linemen Tyleik Williams and Jack Sawyer made key plays, with Williams constantly communicating on the field and Sawyer flying around the ball. “It’s good to face a little bit of adversity and see how our team responds,” Day added.
Offensively, Ohio State’s ability to control the line of scrimmage was evident, as the Buckeyes rushed for nearly 200 yards against a stout Iowa defense. Day praised his offensive line for their physicality and toughness, two elements that had been emphasized during the week of preparation. “We say 60 minutes of inside drill, and figure out where we are running the ball and stopping the run. I think this can give us a lot of confidence moving forward.”
Day also acknowledged the standout performance of wide receiver Emeka Egbuka, who finished with three touchdown catches in the game. “Emeka is one of the best receivers in the country,” Day said. “He’s a leader, a warrior, and he’s only getting better the more he plays.” Egbuka’s impact was felt throughout the game, particularly in the red zone, where his contested catches helped stretch Ohio State’s lead.
Quarterback Will Howard continued to show promise in his development, bouncing back from an early interception to lead several key drives. “He doesn’t get rattled,” Day remarked. “He’s got confidence, and he’s making big plays with his arm and his feet.” Howard’s connection with wide receiver Jeremiah Smith on a double move in the third quarter was a turning point in the game, setting up a touchdown that put Ohio State firmly in control.
Looking ahead, Day was quick to shift his focus to next week’s game against Oregon, noting the importance of maintaining the physicality and discipline that Ohio State demonstrated against Iowa. “The competition is ramping up each week,” he said. “We’re looking forward to going across the country and playing a great opponent.”
With a strong win under their belt and a critical matchup on the horizon, the Buckeyes are primed to build on their success as they continue their march toward the postseason.
