Ohio State wrestling fans have every reason to be excited about the future of the program, as head coach Tom Ryan just signed a three-year extension, keeping him in Columbus through at least the 2027 season. Ryan has been nothing short of phenomenal during his 19 seasons at Ohio State, guiding the Buckeyes to the 2015 NCAA team title and nine Top 5 finishes nationally. The extension is well deserved, as Ryan continues to lead the program both on and off the mat.
Carly Grimshaw Rusnov, senior associate athletics director for compliance and wrestling administrator, praised Ryan’s leadership and commitment to student-athletes. “Tom is an exceptional leader,” she said. “We are confident that his vision will continue to elevate Buckeye wrestling in the future.”
Ryan echoed the sentiment, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to continue building a championship culture in Columbus. “Columbus is a special city,” he said. “It’s been a blessing to raise our family here and build a program with the trust of the administration and Buckeye Nation.”
Ryan’s coaching accolades are nothing short of legendary, producing 73 All-Americans, 26 Big Ten champions, and 13 NCAA individual champions, while amassing 213 dual wins at Ohio State. His teams have also excelled academically, with 41 Big Ten Distinguished Scholars and numerous Academic All-Big Ten honorees.
Looking ahead, Ohio State wrestling fans can expect big things. The 2024-25 season is packed with thrilling matchups, as the Buckeyes will battle Big Ten foes Rutgers, Purdue, Minnesota, and Penn State at home in the Covelli Center. Road trips to face Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, and rival Michigan will provide plenty of drama as the Buckeyes look to build on last season’s success.
Last year, Ohio State finished eighth at the NCAA Championships with a 15-2 overall record and a 7-1 Big Ten record. Junior Jesse Mendez, who captured both the Big Ten and NCAA titles at 141 pounds, will lead the charge once again. The Buckeyes return a stacked lineup, including All-Americans Rocco Welsh (174), Dylan D’Emilio (149), and heavyweight Nick Feldman.
The Buckeyes’ non-conference schedule kicks off with the Clarion Open on Nov. 3, followed by home duals against Tennessee-Chattanooga, Hofstra, and Oregon State. Big road tests await with matches against Edinboro and Pittsburgh, along with a trip to the Cliff Keen Las Vegas event.
With Ryan at the helm and a talented roster, Ohio State wrestling is primed for another championship run. Buckeye fans, get ready for an exciting season as the Scarlet and Gray take to the mat, building on a tradition of excellence that shows no signs of slowing down. Go Bucks!
