Ohio State’s defensive line received a major boost with the addition of former North Carolina standout Beau Atkinson, who officially committed to the Buckeyes after a recent visit to Columbus. Atkinson, one of the top defensive ends available in the spring transfer portal, selected Ohio State over strong pushes from Georgia and South Carolina. He arrives in Columbus with two seasons of eligibility remaining, becoming the Buckeyes’ first spring transfer portal commit in 2025.
Atkinson brings a powerful presence to the edge at 6-foot-6 and 265 pounds, a frame that also gives defensive line coach Larry Johnson the flexibility to shift him inside if the scheme demands it. His arrival introduces immediate competition alongside Caden Curry and Kenyatta Jackson Jr. for a starting role. Given his production at the collegiate level, Atkinson is a near lock to secure a spot in Ohio State’s two-deep rotation.

He joins a reloaded defensive end room that includes Idaho State transfer Logan George, converted linebacker C.J. Hicks, and highly regarded freshman Zion Grady. Atkinson’s resume speaks for itself: the Raleigh, North Carolina native redshirted in 2022 before making an impact over the next two seasons with the Tar Heels, tallying 54 tackles, 16.5 tackles for loss, 11 sacks, and a forced fumble. His 2024 campaign, which featured 7.5 sacks and 12 TFLs, earned him an overall Pro Football Focus grade of 77, underscoring his effectiveness both against the run and as a pass rusher.
Atkinson’s commitment also marks a crucial moment in Ohio State’s defensive transition. The Buckeyes, coming off a national championship season, are undergoing a significant overhaul along the defensive front. Four key contributors—J.T. Tuimoloau, Jack Sawyer, Ty Hamilton, and Tyleik Williams—have moved on, leaving a void that Atkinson is expected to help fill. Under the guidance of new defensive coordinator Matt Patricia, the former Detroit Lions head coach and NFL veteran, Atkinson is well-positioned to thrive in a revamped system focused on aggressive, versatile play up front.

The Buckeyes aren’t done reloading, with former Georgia Southern defensive tackle Troy Pikes slated to visit Columbus later this week as Ohio State continues to search for depth on the interior. Atkinson’s arrival, following the earlier commitment of Logan George, underscores Ohio State’s proactive approach in the portal to maintain its elite defensive standard.
Adding Atkinson not only brings production and experience to a young group but also sends a strong message: the Buckeyes remain committed to building championship-level depth, especially in the trenches.
