Former Ohio State standout Ronnie Hickman is recovering at home after an early-morning assault in New York City that left the Cleveland Browns defensive back with minor injuries, according to multiple reports.
Reports from New York Post state the incident occurred around 4:30 a.m. in the lobby of the SIXTY LES, where Hickman was allegedly approached by four unidentified individuals. Authorities say a confrontation followed and the group struck him before fleeing. He was transported to Bellevue Hospital, treated, and released later that day. Police are still investigating and have not announced any arrests, including whether the attackers knew they were confronting an NFL player. The Browns confirmed he is resting at home with family after receiving medical care.

For those who watched his collegiate career at Ohio State, Hickman’s path to NFL success has always been defined by perseverance. After redshirting in 2019 and contributing on special teams in 2020, he broke out in 2021, leading the Buckeyes with 99 tackles and adding two interceptions, including a touchdown return. He started the final 26 games of his career, earning second-team All-Big Ten honors in 2021 and third-team recognition in 2022. Fans still recall his clutch interception against the Penn State Nittany Lions and his pick-six versus the Akron Zips as defining moments.

Despite going undrafted in the NFL Draft, Hickman fought his way onto Cleveland’s roster and steadily climbed the depth chart. After spot starts early in his career, he emerged as a full-time starter in 2025, recording a career-best 103 tackles and two interceptions while logging nearly every defensive snap. His rise from undrafted signee to core starter exemplifies the work ethic Buckeye fans admired in Columbus.
While the incident in New York is undoubtedly unsettling, the most encouraging development is his quick release from the hospital and positive outlook for a full recovery. Given Hickman’s track record of overcoming challenges, there is little doubt among Ohio State supporters that he will return to form and continue representing the program proudly at the professional level.
