For nearly three decades, the soundtrack of Ohio State football Saturdays and winter nights inside the Schottenstein Center has been delivered by one familiar voice. Now, Paul Keels is receiving another well-earned honor, as the longtime “Voice of the Buckeyes” is set to be inducted into the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame this June.

Keels is one of 14 members of the 2026 induction class, a group that includes former players, coaches, officials and administrators. Notably, he is the lone broadcaster among them — a fitting distinction for someone whose career has been dedicated to telling the stories of Ohio sports at the highest level.

Since joining Ohio State Sports Network in 1998, Keels has served as the play-by-play voice for Ohio State football and men’s basketball on WBNS Radio. While many fans most closely associate him with crisp autumn afternoons alongside former Buckeye All-American Jim Lachey in the broadcast booth, Keels has been just as steady on the hardwood, working for decades with former Ohio State guard Ron Stokes to bring Buckeye basketball to life across the airwaves.

A native of Cincinnati, Keels’ broadcasting journey began humbly at WLW Radio in 1979 as a news anchor and reporter. His career quickly accelerated. By 1980, he was in Detroit calling NBA games for the Pistons on WJR Radio, and soon after he moved to WWJ Radio, where he handled football and basketball broadcasts for the University of Michigan from 1981 to 1987.

After a stint with UPI Radio Network in Washington, D.C., Keels returned to Cincinnati in 1988 to become the voice of the Cincinnati Bearcats and host a sports talk show on WCKY-AM. Throughout the 1990s, he balanced play-by-play duties and radio hosting roles, including time at Dayton’s WHIO Radio and work calling Cincinnati Bengals games. When the opportunity arose in 1998 to join Ohio State’s radio network, Keels seized it — and Buckeye Nation has benefited ever since.

Beyond Ohio State, Keels’ résumé is filled with notable stops. He served as a preseason announcer for the Cincinnati Bengals on WKRC-TV from 2000 through 2010 and worked Cincinnati Reds television broadcasts in 2010. He is also the author of Tales from the Buckeye Championship Season, chronicling Ohio State’s unforgettable 2002 national title run.

His excellence has not gone unnoticed. Keels is a five-time National Sports Media Association Ohio Broadcaster of the Year and was inducted into the Ohio Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2007. The upcoming Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame enshrinement only strengthens his legacy as one of the most respected voices in the state.

The induction ceremony will take place June 6 at the Hilton Polaris in Columbus, featuring a red carpet reception and formal tributes. For Buckeye fans, it will be another opportunity to celebrate a man whose calls have framed some of the most iconic moments in program history.

In an era where players, coaches, and even conferences change rapidly, Keels has been a constant. From dramatic football finishes in Ohio Stadium to buzzer-beaters on the basketball court, his steady cadence has provided the emotional backdrop for generations of fans. The Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame is honoring more than just a broadcaster. It is recognizing a storyteller who has spent nearly 30 years capturing the heartbeat of Ohio State athletics — one play at a time.
