The Columbus Aviators saw a promising start unravel into another frustrating defeat, falling 28-23 to the Dallas Renegades on April 12 in a game defined by missed opportunities and costly turnovers.
With Ted Ginn Jr. unavailable following his recent arrest in Texas, offensive coordinator Todd Haley stepped in as acting head coach. The off-field distraction loomed over a team still searching for its first win, and despite stretches of strong play, the Aviators couldn’t overcome self-inflicted mistakes once again.
Early on, there were signs of progress. Quarterback Jalen McClendon orchestrated an efficient opening drive, connecting with John Lovett for a touchdown that showcased both precision and playmaking. The defense followed with a much-needed stop, highlighted by DJ Miller breaking up a pass to force a punt—an encouraging response after the unit struggled mightily the previous week.
However, momentum quickly shifted. Despite an impressive start through the air, McClendon’s decision-making proved costly. A late first-half interception thrown deep in Aviators territory turned into a pivotal moment when former Buckeye Shaun Wade turned the takeaway into a defensive touchdown with the help of a lateral to Ajene Harris. Instead of extending their lead, the Aviators went into halftime trailing.
The second half followed a similar script. Another interception by McClendon set up a short field, allowing Dallas quarterback Austin Reed to capitalize with a scoring drive. Though the Aviators continued to fight, including another touchdown from Lovett and a late scoring connection to Antwane Wells, the early damage proved too much to overcome.
A late two-point conversion attempt fell short, and the Aviators’ final chance—using a unique UFL rule requiring a fourth-and-12 conversion to retain possession—ended with a short gain that sealed the outcome.
Now sitting at 0-3, Columbus finds itself at the bottom of the standings alongside the Louisville Kings, with questions mounting both on and off the field. Ginn has since acknowledged responsibility for his actions, but his status moving forward remains uncertain as the Aviators prepare for a quick turnaround in a rematch against Dallas.
For Columbus sports fans, the situation is a difficult one to watch. While there are flashes of potential on the field, the combination of turnovers and instability at the top has made the early part of the season a challenging stretch for a team still trying to find its identity.
