The Columbus Aviators are officially ready for liftoff.
With training camp complete and the franchise’s first 50-man roster set, Columbus enters its inaugural UFL season with a roster built on proven production, experienced leadership, and intriguing upside. As the Aviators prepare to open play, the foundation of the team suggests a group capable of competing immediately while establishing a long-term identity in the league.
At the core of this roster is a trio of All-UFL performers from the 2025 season. Offensive tackle Ryan Nelson anchors the line, providing stability and protection up front, while tight end Gunnar Oakes offers versatility as both a blocker and pass-catching threat. In the secondary, Kedrick Whitehead Jr. brings elite playmaking ability after earning both All-UFL honors and Special Teams Player of the Year recognition, making him one of the most dynamic defenders on the roster.
Offensively, the Aviators appear well-positioned to generate production. Quarterback Jalan McClendon returns after finishing third in the league in passing yards (1,464), completions, and attempts last season, giving Columbus a reliable presence under center. He’ll be supported by a balanced backfield led by Toa Taua, who led the UFL in rushing touchdowns with six despite playing in just seven games. That combination of efficiency and explosiveness could make the Aviators’ offense one of the more dangerous units in the league.
The skill positions feature a mix of speed and depth, with six wide receivers and three tight ends rounding out the passing attack. Oakes headlines the tight end room, while players like Keke Chism, Antwane Wells, and Tay Martin provide options on the outside. The offensive line, led by Nelson, includes experienced contributors such as Matt Farniok and Aaron Monteiro, forming a group expected to set the tone physically.
Defensively, the Aviators have prioritized depth and versatility. The defensive line includes notable names like Kenny Willekes and Caeveon Patton, while the linebacker corps is anchored by Tony Fields II and Jailin Walker. In the secondary, Whitehead headlines a deep defensive back group that features multiple contributors capable of impacting both coverage and special teams.
Special teams could also be a strength, with Whitehead’s proven impact complemented by kicker Ryan Coe and punter Brad Robbins, giving Columbus reliability in all three phases of the game.
Structurally, the roster is balanced across the board, featuring three quarterbacks, three running backs, six wide receivers, three tight ends, eight offensive linemen, eight defensive linemen, six linebackers, 10 defensive backs, and three specialists. That distribution reflects a team built for both flexibility and durability over the course of a full season.
The Aviators will begin their historic campaign on the road against the Orlando Storm on Sunday, March 29, before returning to Columbus for their home opener at Historic Crew Stadium on April 3 against the DC Defenders. The home debut will double as a celebration, highlighted by a halftime performance from multi-platinum artist Gavin DeGraw as part of the “614 Kickoff” event.
