The No. 4/5 Ohio State women’s ice hockey team showcased grit and determination over the weekend, securing a sweep against No. 8 St. Lawrence with two thrilling victories in Canton, N.Y.

Game 1: Buckeyes Triumph in Overtime Thriller

On Friday night, Ohio State (3-2-0, 2-2-0 WCHA) battled to a 3-2 overtime victory. Captain Jenna Buglioni emerged as the hero, needing only seven seconds of overtime to score the game-winning goal, her second of the night. This marked the Buckeyes’ first nonconference win of the season.

St. Lawrence struck first at 11:59 in the opening period, but Buglioni quickly responded at 16:18, tying the game with a backhanded shot off a rebound from linemate Maddi Wheeler. The Saints regained the lead in the second period with a goal from Abby Hustler, but the resilient Buckeyes fought back in the third. Jocelyn Amos knotted the game at 2-2 with a goal that required review before being confirmed.

Buglioni’s overtime heroics sealed the win, as she capitalized off a faceoff play involving teammates Emma Peschel and Makenna Webster, backhanding another shot past Saints goaltender Emma-Sofie Nordström.

Game 2: Ohio State Completes the Sweep

Saturday’s game saw the Buckeyes (4-2-0, 2-2-0 WCHA) complete the sweep with a 5-3 victory. Buglioni again proved pivotal, scoring the game-winning goal in the third period to break a 3-3 tie.

The Buckeyes jumped out to an early lead with Riley Brengman scoring her first goal of the season just 3:20 into the game. After St. Lawrence tied it up, Kaira Zanon and Joy Dunne responded with quick goals to give Ohio State a 3-1 advantage heading into the second period.

However, the Saints rallied, scoring twice in the second to even the score at 3-3. Buglioni’s go-ahead goal with 11:38 left in the third period broke the deadlock, and Amos sealed the win with an empty-net goal in the final minute.

Weekend Stars

Buglioni’s clutch performances led the way for the Buckeyes, scoring three goals over the two games, including two game-winners. Amos and Brengman were also standouts, each contributing two points in the Saturday victory.

Goaltender Amanda Thiele made 12 saves in Friday’s win, while Hailey MacLeod recorded 18 stops on Saturday to improve to 2-1-0 on the season.
