Ohio State’s rich tradition of honoring its football heroes has taken on a new form with the “Block O” jersey, awarded annually to a player who exemplifies the program’s values of toughness, accountability, and leadership. The NCAA’s decision in 2020 to allow players to wear the No. 0 jersey created an opportunity for Ohio State to celebrate a player who embodies the spirit of Buckeye football. This year, that honor goes to fifth-year senior linebacker Cody Simon.
Cody Simon, hailing from New Jersey, has proven himself as a leader both on and off the field. His journey at Ohio State hasn’t always been smooth, but his perseverance and dedication to the team have never wavered. Reflecting on his time with the Buckeyes, Simon stated, “I love this program so much. I had goals when I got here, and even though everything hasn’t always gone the way I envisioned, I couldn’t have asked for better teammates.”
Simon’s selection as the 2024 Block O recipient is a testament to his resilience and leadership. He follows in the footsteps of Jonathon Cooper, Thayer Munford, Kamryn Babb, and Xavier Johnson, becoming just the second Buckeye from outside Ohio to earn this prestigious honor.
Ohio State linebackers coach James Laurinaitis, himself a Buckeye legend, spoke highly of Simon’s versatility and leadership. “Cody Simon’s the guy you could put at MIKE, at WILL, at SAM,” Laurinaitis remarked. “He’s the unquestioned leader of the group. He’s the leader of the defense. He gets everybody lined up. Very technical, has really good footwork, really clean footwork, which allows him to change direction, get off blocks, and tackle well.”
In addition to being awarded the Block O jersey, Simon was named a team captain, joining running back TreVeyon Henderson, wide receiver Emeka Egbuka, and defensive end Jack Sawyer. As Simon steps into the role of defensive leader, filling the shoes of Tommy Eichenberg, he understands the weight of the responsibility. “For me, being a leader means I gotta be at my best every day. The guys in the room have to look to someone to see an example. And I need to be able to lead them vocally, physically, and emotionally,” Simon said.
The Block O jersey, created in memory of Bill Willis—a College and Pro Football Hall of Famer and one of the first players to break professional football’s color barrier—represents more than just a number. It symbolizes the highest standards of character, toughness, and accountability. Simon’s selection as the 2024 Block O recipient cements his place among the greats of Ohio State football, and Buckeye Nation can be proud to see him lead the team into battle this season.
