Ohio State’s impact on the football coaching landscape continues to grow, with several former Buckeyes making waves as coaches at both the collegiate and professional levels. Among the most prominent names is Marcus Freeman, who has established himself as the head coach of Notre Dame. However, Freeman and his Fighting Irish fell to Ryan Day and the Buckeyes in the National Championship, further solidifying Ohio State’s dominance on the national stage.

Other Buckeye greats leading programs or making significant coaching contributions include Luke Fickell (Wisconsin Head Coach), Mike Vrabel (New England Patriots Head Coach), Brian Hartline (Ohio State Offensive Coordinator), Eddie George (Tennessee State Head Coach), Tim Walton (Ohio State Cornerbacks Coach and Co-Defensive Coordinator), J.T. Barrett (Chicago Bears Quarterbacks Coach), and Kenny Guiton (Wisconsin Assistant Coach). Now, another former Buckeye is set to join their ranks.

Washington has hired former Ohio State center Mike Brewster as its assistant offensive line coach, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel. Brewster brings a wealth of experience to the Huskies’ coaching staff, having spent the previous season as the offensive line coach at Valparaiso. Before that, he served as the tight ends coach at Tennessee State for two seasons and held support staff roles at Western Michigan, Bowling Green, and Cincinnati.

A key figure in Ohio State’s offensive line history, Brewster was a four-year starter at center from 2008-2011. He earned first-team All-American honors in 2010 and served as a team captain in 2011, embodying the leadership and tenacity that define Buckeye football. After his collegiate career, Brewster played two seasons in the NFL with the Jacksonville Jaguars, followed by brief stints with the Miami Dolphins and New Orleans Saints. He began his coaching journey at Orangewood Christian School in 2017 before transitioning to the college coaching ranks.

Buckeye fans won’t have to wait long to see Brewster face his alma mater. On September 27, 2025, Ohio State will travel to Seattle to take on Washington in the Big Ten opener for both teams. As another Buckeye enters the coaching world, it serves as a testament to the program’s ability to develop not just elite players but also top-tier football minds. The Buckeye coaching tree continues to grow, reinforcing Ohio State’s lasting influence on the game at every level.
