In a recent episode of “The Joel Klatt Show,” college football analyst Joel Klatt praised Ohio State’s strong start to the 2024 season. Klatt credited new offensive coordinator Chip Kelly for the Buckeyes’ offensive dominance through the first two games.
Ohio State’s offense has been explosive, racking up 108 points, 15 touchdowns, and 1,087 total yards against Akron and Western Michigan. While these victories came against Group of 5 opponents, Klatt emphasized that Ohio State is doing exactly what is expected at this stage. He pointed out that other top programs have struggled to achieve the same level of performance against similar competition.
Klatt highlighted Ohio State’s defensive dominance as well, noting that the team hasn’t allowed a touchdown and has outscored its opponents 108-6. “You might say they haven’t played anyone,” Klatt remarked, “but they’ve done exactly what they should be doing. Teams like Notre Dame and Oregon would love to be in their shoes right now.”
One area where Klatt sees a significant improvement is the Buckeyes’ running game, which has been revitalized under Kelly’s guidance. In their last game, Ohio State rushed for 273 yards and six touchdowns, a notable improvement from previous seasons. “The inability to control the line of scrimmage has been Ohio State’s biggest issue recently,” Klatt said. He praised the running back duo of TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins, who are averaging 147 yards per game on over 7 yards per carry. Klatt believes that Ohio State’s newfound ability to run the ball makes them a serious threat.
Despite the relatively easy competition so far, Klatt is confident that Ohio State is a dangerous team. He believes if the Buckeyes can maintain or build on their run game and continue their defensive dominance, they will be incredibly tough to beat this year.
Ohio State has a bye in Week 3, but will return to action on September 21 when they host the Marshall Thundering Herd at Ohio Stadium. Game time and TV coverage are yet to be announced.
