Two important Buckeye starters, left guard Donovan Jackson and linebacker Cody Simon, who missed the Week 1 win against Akron, are available for the upcoming game against Western Michigan. However, their status will be decided closer to kickoff, as both are game-time decisions.
Jackson and Simon participated in pregame warmups before the Akron game, and head coach Ryan Day confirmed they were practicing by midweek. Their potential return would provide a significant boost as Ohio State continues its pursuit of a national championship in 2024.
Cody Simon, a fifth-year senior and team leader, is a key piece in the Buckeye defense. Despite a rotational role last season, Simon recorded 57 tackles and was the top vote-getter for team captain. He was also awarded the prestigious “Block O” jersey, symbolizing his leadership and impact on the field.
Donovan Jackson, a two-time first-team All-Big Ten selection, has been a mainstay at left guard for the past two seasons. His return would strengthen the offensive line, particularly in the run game, where Ohio State is looking for more consistency.
If Jackson and Simon are unable to play, Austin Siereveld will likely fill in at left guard, while Sonny Styles could shift to middle linebacker. C.J. Hicks or Arvell Reese, who impressed in the season opener, may step in to support the linebacker unit.
As of now, four players are confirmed out for Week 2: offensive lineman Devontae Armstrong, safety Jayden Bonsu, wide receiver Reis Stocksdale, and running back TC Caffey. Caffey, sidelined with a season-ending knee injury, leads the group of unavailable reserves.
Ohio State fans will be eagerly awaiting kickoff to see if these key starters can return and contribute to what promises to be another step toward a championship season.
