Maurice Clarett’s journey back to Ohio State football has been one of redemption and renewal, marking a significant chapter in his life more than 20 years after leading the Buckeyes to a national championship as a freshman. This season, Clarett has reconnected with the program, frequently attending practices, engaging with players, and offering motivational support. His return comes as Ohio State prepares for a high-stakes postseason matchup, a fitting backdrop for a story of perseverance.
Clarett, once a star running back for the Buckeyes’ 2002 national championship team, saw his promising career derailed following an indefinite suspension for NCAA violations and a subsequent series of personal and legal struggles. After a brief and unsuccessful stint in the NFL with the Denver Broncos, Clarett faced nearly four years in prison for robbery and weapons charges. For years, his relationship with Ohio State remained fractured.
However, that began to change this past summer when Ohio State head coach Ryan Day invited Clarett to meet at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. Day, aware of Clarett’s impactful mentorship of UConn men’s basketball players during their back-to-back NCAA championships, saw value in rekindling the former Buckeye’s connection to the program.
“The conversation was as impressive a conversation as I’ve had in a while,” Day said of their first meeting. “It continued to grow from there.”
Clarett has since become a regular presence at practices and games, bringing energy and perspective to the team. Players like senior running back TreVeyon Henderson appreciate his contributions, noting the “juice” Clarett brings to the field. Clarett himself describes his role as offering advice and encouragement, drawing from his own experiences overcoming adversity.
“He’s got a certain mindset and toughness about him as someone who has faced and conquered a lot in life,” Day said. “He’s great to have around the team.”
Clarett’s return to Ohio State has also coincided with his daughter Jayden enrolling as a freshman, a moment of profound personal significance. For years, Clarett avoided football, burying the pain of his separation from the sport and the university. Now, being back with the Buckeyes has rekindled his love for the game and brought a sense of closure.
“It’s almost like you went back home,” Clarett said, reflecting on his emotional return. “The whole experience has made me shed tears more than a few times.”
Clarett has also shared his thoughts on social media, expressing gratitude and pride in being part of Ohio State’s journey once again. In a heartfelt post, he encouraged others facing challenges to persevere, highlighting his own path to resilience and success.
Today, Clarett balances his work with Ohio State football, UConn basketball, and his business ventures, continuing to inspire through his story of redemption. As the Buckeyes gear up for the College Football Playoff, Clarett’s presence is a testament to the enduring bonds of team, perseverance, and the power of second chances.
