Offensive Player of the Game: Quenshawn Judkins
Running back Quenshawn Judkins bounced back after a shaky start in Week 1, making his mark against Western Michigan. While a huge touchdown run was called back due to a penalty, Judkins still managed to cross the goal line twice. He showcased his ability to hit the gaps with precision, making it clear that he’s a force in Ohio State’s backfield.
“I felt like he had a bounce-back game,” said JR from The OHIO Podcast. “He had that big run, but penalties brought it back. Still, two touchdowns, and he worked hard all game.”
J.J. Smith: The Silent Hero
Wide receiver J.J. Smith continued to make his case as one of the nation’s top talents, racking up 119 yards and a touchdown on just five receptions. But what often goes unnoticed is his blocking ability, which paved the way for Judkins’ second touchdown.
“I’ve been saying he’s the best in the country,” Chris Wilds. “That block he made to spring Quenshawn’s second TD? Unbelievable.”
Will Howard and the Offensive Line’s Statement Game
Quarterback Will Howard also turned heads with an almost 300-yard passing performance, throwing for a touchdown and rushing for another. His chemistry with J.J. Smith was apparent, and his poise under pressure stood out.
Yet, the real surprise was Ohio State’s offensive line. Criticized for the past two seasons, the line played with newfound aggression. Whether it was pulling tackles or executing zone-blocking schemes, the Buckeyes’ front five gave Howard and Judkins room to thrive.
“We’ve dogged this offensive line for two years, but today was different. Yes, it’s Western Michigan, but you have to start somewhere,” said host Eric Boggs
Defensive Player of the Game: Cody Simon
On the defensive side, Cody Simon returned with a bang. The linebacker was all over the field, recording a sack and disrupting Western Michigan’s offense at critical moments. His presence, combined with the coaching of James Laurinaitis, has revitalized the linebacker corps.
“These linebackers look different with him out there,” said JR. “Simon is proof of the work Laurinaitis is doing.”
Defensive Play of the Game: Sonny Styles and Caleb Downs Deliver Big Hits
When it came to the defense’s highlight reel, Sonny Styles and Caleb Downs stole the show. Styles’ hit on a Western Michigan running back late in the second quarter lifted the ball carrier off his feet, a bone-crushing tackle that energized the defense.
Meanwhile, Caleb Downs added his own highlight with a tackle for loss, shooting through the backfield like a cannon. His speed and tackling precision earned him high praise from fans and coaches alike.
“That guy’s lucky to still have his legs,” joked Boggs
Final Thoughts
With their second win of the season, Ohio State looked polished and in sync on both sides of the ball. From Judkins’ grinding runs to Simon’s leadership on defense, the Buckeyes are gearing up for tougher challenges down the road. But before they can tackle powerhouses like Penn State or Michigan, they’ve shown that they can handle business when needed.
