Jaloni Cambridge, the No. 2 overall recruit in the 2024 class for women’s basketball, wasted no time making an impact for Ohio State. In her highly anticipated debut, the five-star freshman showcased her exceptional talent, scoring 31 points in a commanding 104-69 victory over Cleveland State. Her stat line was a historic one: Cambridge shot 12 of 14 from the field, nailed two of her three three-point attempts, made all five free throws, and added six assists, five steals, six rebounds, and two blocks.
According to OptaSTATS, Cambridge is the only player in the last 25 years to record 30 points, five rebounds, five assists, five steals, and two blocks while shooting over 80% from the field, 60% from three-point range, and 100% from the free-throw line. This achievement is unmatched even in the NBA, WNBA, or Division I men’s basketball, and she accomplished it in her first college game.
“She displayed not only her talent but also impressive poise and maturity,” said Ohio State head coach Kevin McGuff. “She made everyone around her better, played at both ends of the floor, and delivered a really impressive debut.”
Cambridge’s Seamless Integration and Early Leadership
Cambridge wasted no time establishing herself as a leader and playmaker. In a roster already rich with talent, including returning stars Cotie McMahon and Taylor Thierry and transfer additions Chance Gray and Ajae Petty, Cambridge stood out with her scoring ability and mature presence on the court.
“She’s incredibly coachable and has a team-first approach,” said McGuff. “Her talent and work ethic have led to rapid progress.”
Cambridge set the tone from the start, scoring eight points in the first quarter as Ohio State surged to a 24-7 lead. She maintained her dominance, reaching double figures by the start of the second quarter, and even scored 17 points in just 12 minutes of second-half action before exiting with the other starters. Cambridge’s elite speed contributed to 20 of her 31 points in transition, and her defensive prowess was on full display in Ohio State’s full-court press.
“We were already a fast team last season, but with Cambridge, we’ve reached another level of quickness,” said McMahon. “She’s going to be key for us, especially with our defensive press.”
Making an Impact Beyond Scoring
Rebounding was an area of weakness for Ohio State last season, and despite being one of the shortest players on the team at 5-foot-7, Cambridge demonstrated her ability to contribute on the boards, impressing teammates like Petty, who noted that Cambridge led the team in rebounding during the preseason.
Cambridge also chose Ohio State in part because of the supportive, family-oriented environment. “Family is everything to me,” said the Nashville native. “Being here, I found another family that feels just like home.”
A Dominant Team Performance
Ohio State showcased its depth in the season opener, as all 10 players scored. McMahon added 17 points, hitting four of five three-pointers, while Thierry scored 11 points on efficient shooting. The Buckeyes’ defense forced 24 turnovers and racked up 16 steals, marking their highest steals count in a non-conference game since December 2023. Ohio State held Cleveland State to 18.8% shooting in the first quarter, establishing a 24-9 lead and building on that with a strong second half.
Looking Ahead
After an explosive start to the season, Ohio State will look to build on this momentum as they host Charlotte on Tuesday, Nov. 12 at Value City Arena. The game, broadcast on B1G+, promises another opportunity for Cambridge and her teammates to showcase their skills and assert Ohio State as a formidable contender in women’s college basketball.
