Ohio State women’s basketball head coach Kevin McGuff, a key figure in the program’s rise over the past decade, is facing legal consequences following an incident last week in Dublin, Ohio. As Buckeye fans, it’s disappointing to see one of our own involved in a situation like this, and while the facts are still unfolding, the seriousness of the matter warrants careful attention.
According to a report from the Dublin Police Department, McGuff was arrested last Tuesday evening after a witness claimed a vehicle struck multiple curbs and drove through a residential lawn. When officers arrived, McGuff reportedly failed several field sobriety tests and declined to provide a breath sample. The arresting officer cited several concerning indicators, including McGuff’s delayed responses, the strong odor of alcohol, and poor performance during sobriety evaluations, before placing him under arrest for operating a vehicle while impaired (OVI).
McGuff was processed by Dublin Police and later released to his wife, Letitia. His driver’s license was seized at the time of the arrest.
Ohio State University released a brief statement acknowledging the incident: “The Department of Athletics is aware of an incident involving women’s basketball head coach Kevin McGuff. The department is in communication with Coach McGuff and monitoring the situation closely. This is an ongoing, personal legal matter, and the department will share additional information at the appropriate time.”
Since taking over the program in 2013, McGuff has led the Buckeyes to national prominence and has been instrumental in recruiting and developing elite-level talent. His leadership has elevated Ohio State women’s basketball to consistent Big Ten contention and national relevance. That legacy makes this recent development all the more concerning and unfortunate for those of us who support the program.
As Buckeye fans, we understand the importance of accountability, both on and off the court. While Coach McGuff’s future in Columbus will likely be shaped by the outcome of this case, we trust that Ohio State will handle the matter with integrity, transparency, and fairness as more information becomes available.
