Ryan Day announced Wednesday that defensive tackle Tyleik Williams is set to return for Ohio State’s matchup against Iowa, marking the first time the Buckeyes will have all 11 defensive starters available since Week 2. While this is great news for the defense, the offense may be missing a key weapon. Wide receiver Carnell Tate is listed as questionable for the game according to the team’s status report.
Tate has been a reliable target in the Buckeyes’ passing attack, tallying 14 receptions for 219 yards and a touchdown through the first four games of 2024. He ranks third on the team in receiving yards, behind Emeka Egbuka and Jeremiah Smith, and has consistently produced, with at least 45 yards in every game. His physicality on the perimeter as a blocker has also been a huge asset for the Buckeyes.
If Tate is unable to play, true sophomore Brandon Inniss is likely to get the nod for his first career start. Inniss, a five-star recruit from the class of 2023, has already made an impact this season as a punt returner, amassing 106 yards on 11 returns, surpassing the Buckeyes’ total from last year. Inniss has also contributed with five catches for 63 yards. Should he start, Emeka Egbuka will likely slide outside, with Inniss working out of the slot.
Other receivers like Bryson Rodgers, Jayden Ballard, and Kojo Antwi could also see an uptick in playing time if Tate is sidelined, adding depth to the rotation.
On the defensive side, Williams’ return means the Buckeyes will be at full strength for the first time in weeks. Linebacker Cody Simon missed the season opener, and Williams was out for games three and four. His presence will be crucial against an Iowa team that prides itself on physicality.
The Buckeyes and Hawkeyes are set to square off at 3:30 p.m. on CBS in a game that could test both Ohio State’s depth and discipline. Here’s hoping Carnell Tate is ready to suit up, but if not, it’s time for the next man up to shine.
