Ohio State head coach Ryan Day provided an update on two key starters, linebacker Cody Simon and offensive guard Donovan Jackson, who missed the season opener against Akron. During his Tuesday press conference, Day mentioned that both players are considered “day-to-day” as they recover from their respective injuries. While their availability for Week 2 remains uncertain, it doesn’t appear to be a long-term issue for either player.

Donovan Jackson, a stalwart on Ohio State’s offensive line, has been a major contributor throughout his Buckeye career. His absence was felt during the game against Akron, but the offense managed to find its rhythm after a slow start. Austin Siereveld stepped in for Jackson, making his first career start, and Day was pleased with his performance. He praised Siereveld as a player with “real potential,” noting that the young guard was close to grading out as a champion in the victory. Regardless of Jackson’s status moving forward, Siereveld’s solid showing could lead to more playing time.

On the defensive side, Cody Simon, a veteran in the linebacker room, has been penciled in as the starting Mike linebacker. Despite his absence, Ohio State’s defense performed well, with defensive coordinator Jim Knowles expressing confidence in the trio of Simon, Sonny Styles, and C.J. Hicks, all of whom he views as starting-caliber players.

Day also highlighted some of the positive performances from Week 1, including contributions from Arvell Reese and Jelani Thurman, as well as the need for continued improvement in the ground game. Offensive coordinator Chip Kelly echoed these sentiments, sharing his own take on the Buckeyes’ offensive progress, while quarterback Will Howard reflected on his development within the system.

Overall, Ohio State’s ability to dominate Akron without two of its veteran leaders is a positive sign, but the team will certainly benefit from the return of Simon and Jackson as they continue their season.
