On a recent episode of The OHIO Podcast, hosts Eric Boggs and Cory Thompson delved into Ohio State Athletic Director Ross Bjork’s comments about Ryan Day’s future as head coach. Bjork’s appearance on 97.1 The Fan’s Morning Juice sparked heated discussions among Buckeye Nation, with opinions ranging from unwavering support to skepticism about the program’s direction under Day.
During his interview, Bjork was asked about his confidence in Ryan Day’s ability to lead the team, particularly in light of recent struggles against Michigan. He expressed steadfast support:
“Coach Day and I have just hit it off so well. I’ve been really, really impressed. Every single time I talk to him, I learn something. He’s innovative. He recruits at the highest level. He’s got a great staff.”
Bjork emphasized a commitment to process over outcome, urging fans to resist a “championship-or-bust” mentality. He framed the program’s success as a byproduct of maintaining core values and sticking to a deliberate plan.
“If the process is right, the end result will take care of itself,” Bjork stated, adding, “We’re Ohio State. We should be confident every single day.”
Eric and Cory’s reaction to Bjork’s comments was a mix of skepticism and analysis. Cory likened Bjork’s reassurances to “AD-level coach speak,” questioning the sincerity of his support:
“I’m starting to get a car salesman vibe from Bjork. I feel like he’s always going to be pro who’s employed. Even if somebody was 5-8, he’d be like, ‘Well, yeah, it’s been a rough season, but he’s got my confidence.’”
Eric, on the other hand, speculated that Bjork’s comments were as much about psychology as they were about strategy:
“This is a psychology move. Bjork obviously understands the pulse of the fan base and the mental fragility of our head coach right now.”
A significant theme of the discussion centered on the financial hurdles tied to firing Day. Bjork’s decision-making, the hosts suggested, is influenced by the staggering costs of buyouts and potential coaching changes. Eric laid out the numbers:
“If Ross Bjork fires Ryan Day, we’re looking at $50 million-plus in buyouts. You can add in another $10 million for assistant coaches, plus the buyout for whoever he hires next. This could climb to $60-plus million.”
Cory agreed, emphasizing that this financial burden makes Day’s return in 2024 likely, regardless of the outcome against Tennessee or in upcoming games.
The hosts also highlighted the ripple effect of a coaching change on recruiting and roster stability. With significant donor investment in recruiting and the transfer portal, Bjork is under pressure to avoid destabilizing the program:
“If Bjork fires Ryan Day, think about who might leave this program,” Eric warned. “Most of the players who have been paid for.”
As always, The OHIO Podcast struck a chord with its listeners. While some fans share Bjork’s optimism, others, like frequent caller Chris Wilds (humorously referenced as likely “throwing his son’s instrument” in frustration), remain unconvinced. The debate encapsulates the high expectations that come with leading a powerhouse like Ohio State.
Bjork’s comments and Eric and Cory’s analysis underscore the complexity of Ohio State’s current situation. While financial and psychological factors point to Day’s return next season, fans are left pondering whether the program is on the right trajectory. One thing is clear: every game matters, and the pressure isn’t easing anytime soon.
