Ohio State head coach Ryan Day emphasized growth and consistency following the Buckeyes’ commanding 31-7 win over Northwestern at historic Wrigley Field. In a game marked by solid defensive play and gradual offensive adjustments, Ohio State stayed true to its process as it gears up for the pivotal stretch of the Big Ten season.

“We’ll watch the film and keep getting better, but I thought we did some good things,” Day said postgame. “In the second half, we started cracking the run game, and Chip [Kelly] did a nice job staying with it. The offensive line made adjustments, which is what we need to see moving forward.”

Offensive Adjustments Pay Dividends

After a slow start, the Buckeye offense found its rhythm in the second half. Day highlighted the importance of balancing the passing attack with a strong running game, particularly against Big Ten defenses adept at crowding the line of scrimmage.

“When they stack the box, you’ve got to stretch them vertically,” Day noted. “Will [Howard] did a great job checking down when needed and keeping us on schedule.”

Running backs TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins along with the offensive line capitalized on adjustments made mid-game, gradually imposing their will on Northwestern’s defense.

Defense Shows Continued Growth

Ohio State’s defense, which has been under scrutiny since a high-profile loss to Oregon earlier in the season, continued to show progress.

“I feel like we’ve done a better job of getting to the quarterback and playing technically and fundamentally sound football,” Day said. “Each week is a new season, and it’s about taking what we’ve learned and applying it.”

Safety Sonny Styles was a standout performer, tallying two sacks and two pass breakups. Day praised his versatility, noting how critical his contributions will be in Ohio State’s remaining games.

“When you can make plays in man and zone coverage, and also blitz effectively, you become a weapon,” Day said. “He’s showing that work pay off.”

Focused on November

With a challenging November schedule ahead, Day stressed the importance of maintaining focus and consistency.

“Everything in the Big Ten is hard,” he said. “You can’t just roll your helmets out there and expect to win. It’s about staying true to our process.”

The Buckeyes’ consistency against unranked opponents—Day is now 47-0 in such games—has been a hallmark of his tenure. “It’s about the process, not the opponent,” he said. “The leaders and staff have embraced that, and it’s led to consistent play.”

Buckeye Nation Takes Over Wrigley

Ohio State fans turned Wrigley Field into a sea of scarlet, creating a home-field atmosphere in Chicago.

“We expected a great turnout, but to see it today was exciting,” Day said. “Driving through Wrigleyville, seeing all the scarlet, it got us fired up. Buckeye Nation traveled well, and we appreciate their support.”

Looking Ahead

With the victory, Ohio State remains in contention for the Big Ten championship and a potential College Football Playoff berth. The Buckeyes will face a tough test next week against a well-rested opponent coming off a bye in undefeated Indiana.

“We know we have to play our best football in November,” Day said. “What matters is what we do moving forward.”

As Ohio State prepares for the final stretch of the season, the emphasis remains on growth, focus, and execution—key ingredients for success in the high-stakes Big Ten.
