Ohio State head coach Ryan Day held a press conference this week, discussing various aspects of the Buckeyes’ season so far, player development, and their preparations during the bye week. Day highlighted standout players like quarterback Will Howard, special teams contributor Lorenzo Styles, and emerging tight end Jelani Thurman, while also emphasizing the team’s overall progress.
Will Howard’s Growth and Command
One of the key topics was quarterback Will Howard’s development. Day praised Howard’s growing command of the offense, noting how his experience in big games is translating to greater confidence and leadership.
“You’re getting to see his command the more you watch him play,” Day said. “He’s played a lot of college football, and you can see the air of confidence that comes with that experience.”
Howard’s daily work ethic has reinforced his ability to lead, a critical factor as the Buckeyes look to refine their offensive identity. With just two games under their belt, Howard’s progress is a promising sign for Ohio State as the season unfolds.
Lorenzo Styles Earning His Keep
Another player who caught Day’s attention was Lorenzo Styles. Known for his impact on special teams, Styles has been making a case for more playing time on defense.
“Any time you play well on special teams, you’re earning more and more trust with the staff,” Day said. “Lorenzo was our special teams player of the week in Week 2. He’s showing up in coverage and getting his hands on balls, which is exactly what we’re looking for.”
Day emphasized that Styles embodies the team’s focus on effort and physicality, qualities that are central to Ohio State’s defensive philosophy.
Establishing the Offensive Identity
Day acknowledged that the Buckeyes’ offense is still in the process of finding its identity. Though there have been glimpses of what it can become, there is still room for growth.
“We’re getting there,” Day said. “You saw a little bit of it last Saturday in terms of the mix we have—running inside zone, running stretch, getting the ball to the perimeter, and mixing in play-action passes. We want to stress the defense in different ways, and our guys are getting more comfortable with that.”
The Buckeyes are aiming for a balanced attack, blending zone schemes, gap schemes, and quarterback runs, but Day admitted they still have some work to do to fully establish their offensive rhythm.
Tight End Depth and Jelani Thurman’s Development
Day also highlighted the tight end group, specifically the rise of Jelani Thurman. With veteran Cade Stover leading the room, Thurman’s growth has been a pleasant surprise for the Buckeyes.
“Jelani’s ability to be coached has stood out to us,” said Day. “He’s stacking positive days and getting better with every rep.”
Thurman’s focus on special teams, attention to detail in meetings, and consistent improvement on the field have earned him more playing time. The depth at tight end—bolstered by players like Thurman, Gene Scott, and Will Kline—gives Ohio State more flexibility and allows Stover to stay fresh for key moments.
Managing Injuries with Caution
Day also touched on the return of offensive lineman Donovan Jackson, who missed time due to injury. The coaching staff took a cautious approach with Jackson, particularly in light of past experiences with players like former wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba.
“Donovan came back for a reason—he wants some hardware,” said Day. “It wasn’t easy holding him back, but after consulting with our sports medicine team, we decided it was best to keep him out unless absolutely necessary.”
Jackson’s return solidifies an improving offensive line that has shown better communication and effort in the first two games.
C.J. Stroud’s NFL Journey
Day also expressed his pride in former Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud, who is making waves in the NFL. Stroud’s recent performance for the Houston Texans caught the attention of his former coach.
“I texted him after the game and told him how proud I am of the way he’s handled himself and built hope into that organization,” Day said.
Stroud has not only impressed with his play but also with his leadership, and Day is confident that his future in the NFL is bright.
The Bye Week and Looking Ahead
With the Buckeyes on a bye in Week 3, Day reflected on the opportunity to recalibrate. The team used the week to focus on situational awareness and fine-tune aspects of their game.
“We had three hard, physical days of practice and then asked the guys to step away for a couple of days,” Day said. “Watching games from home gives you perspective.”
As Ohio State heads into the next phase of the season, Day emphasized the importance of continuous improvement and effort. With key players like Howard, Styles, and Thurman developing rapidly, the Buckeyes are in a strong position as they prepare for tougher competition.
“We’re not where we need to be yet,” Day admitted, “but we’re seeing great effort, and that’s a good starting point.”
