Will Howard has Settled In and is Ready to Go.

Will Howard has now been a part of the Ohio State football program for the better part of six months. The former Big XII champion quarterback of Kansas State has had to face a steep learning curve since joining the Buckeyes back in January of this year. He encountered some challenges during his first 15 practices in the spring. Consequently, the starting quarterback position remains open as preseason camp approaches.

Even with these challenges, Howard took the first snaps at quarterback in the spring game and may still be the frontrunner for the starting role when the Buckeyes resume practice in August. Meanwhile, he has been participating in summer workouts with his new teammates to gear up for his debut season with Ohio State, following four seasons at Kansas State.

Now, Howard feels much more at ease compared to when he first arrived in Columbus.

“The guys have really welcomed me, and going through this second training cycle, including winter and spring ball, I feel settled in. We are starting to come together as a team. We still have work to do, but we’re on the right path.”

With 27 starts at Kansas State and second-team All-Big 12 honors last season, Howard knows he needs to earn his teammates’ trust as a leader during preseason camp.

“There are many things I could say. But I think the main thing is my leadership. I need to show up every day, work hard, and show my teammates that I am committed. Even if I make mistakes, I need to own up to them and show the guys that I care about them. It’s all about doing it for the love of your teammates.”

Howard will face stiff competition for the top quarterback spot until Coach Ryan Day makes a final decision. Devin Brown, Lincoln Kienholz, Julian Sayin, and Air Noland are all still on the roster, providing Ohio State with an abundance of talent at the position.

Despite the competition, Howard insists there is no ill will among the quarterbacks. They all want to play, but they are united in their mission to achieve the team’s goals of defeating Michigan, winning the Big Ten championship, and capturing the national title.

“It’s really good. We’re all very close. The main goal is to win every game. We don’t care who is playing, as long as the Buckeyes are winning. That’s what’s great about our quarterback room.”
