Ohio State has officially named Will Howard, a transfer from Kansas State, as the starting quarterback for the 2024 season. Head coach Ryan Day made the announcement Thursday, solidifying Howard’s position just two weeks before the Buckeyes’ season opener against Akron on August 31.

Howard, who started 28 games at Kansas State and led the Wildcats to the 2022 Big 12 title, entered the offseason as the frontrunner for the Buckeyes’ starting job. However, his journey to securing the starting position was not without challenges. Throughout the spring and early fall camp, Howard faced stiff competition from Devin Brown and Alabama transfer Julian Sayin, among others. Despite some inconsistency in his downfield accuracy during spring practices, Howard’s significant improvements in preseason camp ultimately set him apart from the rest.

“We’re really excited about Will being the starter. He has really taken command of the offense. You feel him in the huddle, you feel his experience. He did a really good job of changing his body in the offseason, so he’s become a threat both with his legs and with his arm.”

Howard’s experience and leadership have been crucial in his rise to the top of Ohio State’s QB depth chart. At 6-foot-4 and 235 pounds, he set a Kansas State record with 48 career touchdown passes and accounted for 67 total touchdowns. His physical transformation during the offseason, coupled with a sprint speed clocked at over 22 miles per hour, makes him a dual-threat that Ohio State fans can be excited about.

New offensive coordinator Chip Kelly echoed Day’s sentiments, praising Howard’s work ethic and decision-making. “Will’s earned it,” Kelly said. “We grade everything, and Will graded out the highest. He’s really worked extremely hard, and his experience has started to shine through.”

Howard’s running ability is another dimension that will be integral to Ohio State’s offense. Last year, he rushed for 351 yards and nine touchdowns at Kansas State. His physicality and speed make him a formidable challenge for opposing defenses. “It’s a big bowling ball,” wide receiver Carnell Tate said of Howard’s running style. “I’ve seen his highlights, and he’s moving. I can’t wait to see him roll.”

With Howard firmly in place as the starting quarterback, Ohio State can now focus on building an offensive game plan around him. Unlike last season, when the Buckeyes’ quarterback competition lingered into the early games, the decision to start Howard allows the team to develop a rhythm as they prepare for non-conference matchups against Akron, Western Michigan, and Marshall before diving into Big Ten play.

Devin Brown, who was in contention for the starting job, will serve as the backup quarterback for now, though freshman Julian Sayin remains a strong contender for the No. 2 spot. Day emphasized the importance of having depth at the quarterback position, citing examples of past Ohio State quarterbacks who stepped up when needed.

“Devin has shown the ability to do just about everything we’ve asked,” Day said. “It’s the consistency and taking care of the football that he needs to continue working on. But all our quarterbacks know they need to be ready when their number is called.”

The competition for the backup spot isn’t over, with Day planning to give all his quarterbacks another look during upcoming scrimmages. With early-season games against lesser opponents, Ohio State may have the opportunity to play multiple quarterbacks, giving each a chance to prove their worth.

As Ohio State gears up for the 2024 season, the Buckeyes have confidence in Howard’s ability to lead them on the field. While the expectations are high for the fifth-year senior, the team doesn’t necessarily need him to be the next Heisman contender. Instead, they need him to be a smart, reliable leader who can make the right decisions and keep the offense moving.

“We need someone who’s going to take care of the football, make good decisions, and make the routine plays routinely,” Day said. “Will has shown he can be that guy, and we’re excited to see what he can do as we start this new chapter.”

With Howard at the helm, Ohio State looks poised to make another run at the Big Ten title and beyond. The journey begins on August 31, and Buckeye Nation is ready to see their new quarterback lead the charge.
