Will Howard, Ohio State’s transfer quarterback from Kansas State, is embracing his role as a Buckeye in his final year of eligibility. Since arriving in Columbus back in January, Howard has spent months adjusting to Ryan Day’s offense, and it’s starting to pay off. After two games as Ohio State’s QB1, Howard’s growing comfort with the system is evident, both on and off the field.

Head coach Ryan Day spoke about Howard’s progress in a recent press conference, highlighting the quarterback’s demeanor and experience. “You’re getting to see his command the more you watch him play,” Day said. “He’s played a lot of college football, and his confidence and leadership are starting to shine through.”

Howard himself echoed that sentiment, expressing how settled he’s become in Ohio State’s environment. “It feels like home,” he said. “I’m getting the routine, I get what game week looks like, and I’m appreciating every moment. This is my last year, so I want to make the most of it.”

Through two games, Howard has posted impressive numbers, completing 64.8% of his passes for 520 yards and four touchdowns. His seamless connection with playmakers like freshman wide receiver Jeremiah Smith has made Ohio State’s offense more dynamic, especially in play-action situations. Howard’s comfort with these intricacies, taught by new offensive coordinator Chip Kelly, has allowed him to elevate his play.

One area where Howard has excelled is in play-action passing, completing 19 of 25 passes for 321 yards and three touchdowns. His experience and vision have helped him take Ohio State’s offense to the next level, where misdirection and strategy are key. Howard, who has embraced Kelly’s teachings, loves the mental chess match that comes with the game. “It’s fun being able to plan something that the opponent isn’t ready for,” Howard said.

Despite an early rocky start against Akron, Howard bounced back with a dominant performance against Western Michigan, leading the Buckeyes to a 56-0 win. His development between games, noted by Kelly and Day, has been encouraging for an Ohio State team looking to make a push for Big Ten and national championships.

“I’m trying to stay in the moment and take everything one day at a time,” Howard shared. “We have a special group here, and I’m just grateful to be a part of it.” With Howard steering the offense and embracing his final year, Ohio State fans have plenty to look forward to as the season unfolds.
